Bipartisan National Security Leaders Call on the President To Address America’s Growing Dependence on Oil
Letter Cites Risks to the U.S. Economy and National Security As Major Drivers for New Policies
Washington, DC – As oil prices hit new highs and the debate continues over drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Americans are grappling with the consequences of U.S. dependence on oil. Now a group of senior national security experts is calling on the President to address our reliance on foreign oil and its risk to both to our economic well-being and our national security. Regardless of whether or not new oil development is allowed in the Refuge, the U.S. will remain heavily dependent on petroleum from foreign sources, with the vast majority of the world’s reserves located in politically volatile areas.
More than 25 of the nation’s top national security experts have sent a letter to President Bush recommending a major new initiative to wean the U.S. off foreign oil before the country is faced with a serious economic, political, or military crisis.You are invited to join some of them next week to discuss the letter and its implications.
