Well, I was slow to move, and one of my compadres at Treehugger beat me to this one... But, thanks to Wilson Tan of Austin, Texas' Ten Thousand Villages for letting me know that Saturday is World Fair Trade Day. "And what is World Fair Trade Day?" you ask... According to its official site,
World Fair Trade Day is an international celebration of Fair Trade internationally, with events organised worldwide. On and around the second Saturday of May every year, IFAT member organisations based in 70 countries, along with Fair Trade shops and networks, host events including Fair Trade breakfasts, talks, music concerts, fashion shows and much more, to promote Fair Trade and campaign for justice in trade. Fair Trade products from marginalised communities in the majority world, including coffee and tea, clothes, jewellery and beautiful handicrafts will be showcased on this day. Many events continue throughout the month of May.There will be events to celebrate WFTD all over the world, so check the site's event listing to see what's happening near you. While there's nothing listed for my neck of the woods right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see that change, as we've got a number of well-established Fair Trade venues here in the Lou'. That's OK -- I'm planning on attending the opening of the brand new farmers' market in walking distance from the house -- woo hoo!!
