Greening the Winter Olympics

From Xinhua via China's People's Daily Online, an article about efforts to green next year's Winter Olympics.
The Torino Olympic Organizing Committee (TOROC) unveiled its new sustainability report aimed at making next year's Winter Olympics the greenest ever at the Sixth World Conference on Sport and Environment, which opened in Nairobi Wednesday.

The Torino Sustainability Report is hailed as a milestone in the quest to make mass spectator events both entertaining and environmentally sound.
Since I'm not a real sports buff (which is hard in a city like St. Louis), the idea of the wastes generated through sporting events never really occurred to me. Looking at the plans developed for the Winter Olympics, though, I get a clear sense of how addressing these events could have real impact. Can you imagine if the major sports leagues just in the US made similar commitments?
