Syracuse, New York, was awarded the EPA Climate Protection Award for the city's efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions earlier this year, and now its decision to power the City Hall with 100 percent renewable energy has earned praise from the Citizens Campaign for the Environment. CCE, a nonprofit, non-partisan advocacy group for the protection of public health and the natural environment, has organized and documented citizen support for public investment and development of renewable energy for local municipal purchases. One could argue that this is largely a symbolic development, but I think symbols are important for demonstrating the potential of renewable power development.
