Thanks to Michael Dorsey for sending me a copy of this essay on Grist that he co-authored. In response, I told Michael that I hadn't followed the CAFTA debate nearly as closely as I wanted to, and it's amazing how our leaders in Washington have a hard time grasping the idea that doing the same thing over and over in expectation of a different result is a form of insanity. I agree completely that the silence of groups like the Nature Conservancy and the World Wildlife Fund doesn't reflect well on them, as the environmental prices we've paid for previous "free trade" agreements have been immense. While environmental groups, like all non-profits, rely on corporate contributions just to keep the doors open, allowing those corporate contributors to cloud their missions seems, at the very least, self-defeating.
