This one's all over the wires and the sustainable and political blogospheres: "Ex-oil lobbyist watered down US climate research." I know, I know -- what a shocker! 1) The chief of staff for the White House council on environmental quality Phillip Cooney was formerly a lobbyist for the American Petroleum Institute. 2) He "edited" reports on the links between greenhouse gases and global warming to play down the connection. 3) He "consulted" with the Competitive Enterprise Institute on his "revisions." In response, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said "Nothing to see here folks. And by the way, did you know Bill Clinton had sexual relations with a White House intern...?"

President's George Bush's decision not to sign the United States up to the Kyoto global warming treaty was partly a result of pressure from ExxonMobil, the world's most powerful oil company, and other industries, according to US State Department papers seen by the Guardian.

The documents, which emerged as Tony Blair visited the White House for discussions on climate change before next month's G8 meeting, reinforce widely-held suspicions of how close the company is to the administration and its role in helping to formulate US policy.
