Professor Corinne Le Quere's guest post does help this poor layman understand some of the science behind recognizing a pattern of global warming through study of the levels of carbon in ocean and land masses. That's as much paraphrasing as I'm going to attempt -- feel free to try to translate this into even simpler language...
