That's the claim Robert Bryce makes in this Salon feature article. Bryce's main point is that "energy independence" is a myth perpetrated by the political classes and their big-energy sugar daddies, but that US will be inextricably linked to the global oil market for the foreseeable future. Bryce isn't completely gloomy, though, as he strongly encourages development of renewable and alternative energy sources as a way to minimize the impact of oil economics and peak oil. A really interesting read.
