ESF has a variety of energy research and economic development projects now funded and under way. The installation of a 250 kilowatt fuel cell, in conjunction with New York Power Authority and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, is one project. The fuel cell will be installed on campus this summer. It will enable scientists to study uses for the distributed power while it produces heat and power for daily use.
Other renewable energy projects at ESF include solar energy, "green building" certification, bioenergy feedstock production and biomass gasification research to produce clean, renewable energy by the fermentation of woody biomass.
